Have some free time on your hands? Love museums? Why not volunteer your services and become a docent.

The Institute of Texan Cultures in Association with the Smithsonian Institute (ITC) is offering docent classes from Feb. 27 – March 9, 2012. Application deadline is Feb. 22.

Docent comes from the Latin word “docens,” which means teacher or lecturer. As a Docent, volunteers will fill a variety of duties including: Exhibit Floor greeter, Tour guide, Guest Services assistant, Character performer, Tex-Kit facilitator, Library assistant or Museum store assistant.

Volunteers are required to work at least three hours each week. Students ages 12 – 17 can also train to be Junior Docents.
