H-E-B Plus! opened its first in-store literacy center at 6818 South Zarzamora on October 7.

R.L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series,  greeted fans and read a special selection during the grand opening. A press conference kicked off the event followed by a book signing from 5 – 6 p.m.

The grocery chain launched the Read3 campaign in September as a literacy initiative to encourage parents to read to their children three times each week. Early learning practices reinforce the need for developing early literacy skills to develop reading fluency.

H-E-B plans to open 10 literacy centers by fall 2011. Currently, H-E-B has two literacy centers — one in Tomball, Texas and the other in Laredo. The literacy centers will feature age-appropriate tables and chairs, a stage and a children’s library section.

Aside from the in-store story times, the literacy centers will host character appearances and book signings with popular authors. Parents can also find information on local literacy programs and services.
