Reading Express Supports Family Literacy

Reading Express Supports Family Literacy

Arlington Public School System supports summer reading with a unique approach to family outreach.

In an effort to increase summer reading, the Arlington Public School System decided to hit the streets and lead families to local libraries by offering them a ride on the library express.

On scheduled dates and times, the Traveling Trolley picks up families near their home and drives them to a local library. This effort, along with mobile libraries, is an attempt to slow the summer slide “in reading skills” that poor children are more apt to experience. The goal is to reach as many young children at home and get them excited about school and help them increase reading skills.

Partnering libraries not only help caregivers and children find their way around the library, but also offer special programming to get children excited about reading. Parents, too, benefit by learning about financial literacy from area credit union representatives.
