Learning Labs Make Use of Museums/Libraries

The notion that learning only occurs in schools is rapidly changing, and Fayettiville libraries and museums are embracing the change.

Students in Fayettville, New York, have another reason to visit their local library. An open lab area or “markerspace” is currently used to access digital tools and media. Fayettville’s Free Library’s popular Fab Lab is equipped with computers and laptops loaded with media creation software and music mixing equipment.

These types of learning labs are springing up all over the country and were inspired by YouMedia, a teen learning space at the Chicago Public Library’s downtown center. You Media not only provides print resources, but also digital software and computers.

The open labs give students an opportunity to explore technology-based and entertainment careers.
