Two Literacy Centers Open in the Southside

H-E-B Grocery opened two new Literacy Centers in the Southside offering families access to books and reading opportunities.

The in-store Literacy Centers are located at the H-E-B stores at 6818 S Zarzamora St and 3323 S.E. Military Drive.

In September, the grocery chain rolled out its Read3 campaign as a literacy initiative to encourage parents to read to their children three times each week. Early learning practices stress the need for developing early literacy skills to develop reading fluency.

In total, H-E-B plans to open 10 literacy centers by fall 2011. Two other literacy centers are located in Tomball, Texas and the other in Laredo. The literacy centers feature age-appropriate tables and chairs, a stage and a children’s library section.

Aside from the in-store story times, the literacy centers will host character appearances and book signings with popular authors. Parents can also find information on local literacy programs and services.
