National and local celebrities are lending their voices to encourage Northside and San Antonio ISD students to get out of bed and into school.

At a press conference on Friday, Mayor Julián Castro announced the Wake Up! and Get Schooled initiative designed to address the attendance and dropout issues challenging local school districts. Two of the largest school districts in San Antonio will test the program in middle and high schools.

Basketball great Magic Johnson and Rap star Nicki Minaj’s recorded messages will be waking up students who sign up for the program. Other artists who have signed on to record messages include Hip-hop artist Ciara and rapper Wiz Khalifa along with local personalities Russell Rush of Mix 96.1, Xavier Da Freakin’ Rican of The Beat 98.5 and comedian Cleto Rodriguez.

The motivational messaging program has seen an increase in attendance in Los Angeles, New York City and Seattle.
