Will the Fiscal Cliff Affect K-12 Education?

While last minute agreements between Republicans and Democrats spared millions in cuts temporarily, some education programs might see the chopping block.

Fiscal Cliff agreements came down to the wire sparing many government agencies for now; however, there are many domestic programs that may lose millions of dollars, including education programs. The temporary relief, referred to as “sequestration” will be revisited in March where more budget cuts are expected.

“As important as this relief is right now to the majority of Americans, this is a temporary, Band-Aid solution,” said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, in a statement. “Kicking the can down the road for two months means that we still face the possibility of staggering and debilitating cuts to public schools, health care and services that our kids and families count on.”
