Alamo Colleges select two new presidents

Northwest Vista College and San Antonio College will be getting new presidents next fall.

The Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees named two new college presidents earlier this week. Current San Antonio College(SAC) president Dr. Robert Zeigler will be retiring this summer, and the position will be taken by Dr. Robert Vela.  At Northwest Vista College (NVC), Dr. Ric Neal Baser will be replacing Dr. Jaqueline Claunch when she too retires this summer. Both Vela and Baser are highly qualified for the positions.

Baser received his doctorate in higher education administration from Oklahoma State University, and then went on to serve at Rose State College as vice president for academic affairs and vice president for student affairs from 1997 to 2008. He also served as the director of alumni and school relations at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

Vela earned a doctorate in educational leadership from a joint program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.  In addition, he is a licensed professional counselor and has a broad resume. Vela currently serves at SAC’s vice president for student and academic success and brings more than 18 years of experience in educational administration. He also previously worked as a community supervision and corrections officer, student-development dean at San Jacinto College-North Campus and has taught counseling-related subjects at a variety of institutions.

Zeigler and Claunch’s retirements will mark the 4th time in the last 2 years that Alamo College presidents have announced their resignations.

San Antonio College and Northwest Vista College are two of the five community colleges of the Alamo Colleges.
