A&M SA launches new teacher training program

Texas A&M San Antonio is offering a new teacher training program this fall that’s designed to extend the student teaching experience.

The new program, Ready for Day One, currently has 52 student teachers registered to work in local school districts, including Southwest, Harlandale, Southside, Northside and San Antonio ISD.  In total, TAMU-SA will partner with 11 school districts in San Antonio and the Alamo Colleges system to produce graduates that meet the rigorous teacher-preparation standards.

The curriculum is modeled on a Pyramid for Teaching and Learning Success that builds on layers from community support (Alamo Colleges and School Districts), teacher preparation curriculum, content knowledge base, effective instruction, creative teaching and topping it off with an extensive field residency.

Each student teacher will be paired off with a best practice mentor teacher at the schools. Assigned university professors will work directly with district staff and teacher preparation students to provide support, guidance and evaluation.

The teacher training residence gives students the opportunity to get hands-on experience in classroom management and instruction. Therefore, when students graduate from the program, they will be fully prepared for their classroom on day one.
