TAMU-SA Comm majors get real-world skills

Online college newspapers give budding journalists an opportunity to develop journalism skills in real-world settings.

The Communications department at Texas A&M University – San Antonio (TAMU-SA) launched its first student-run online newspaper last Spring, The Mesquite. The online publication gives student hands-on experiences in journalism allowing them to practice interviewing, video editing, blogging, editing, and layout and design. The newspaper provides campus news to students, staff and faculty.

The Mesquite is staffed by student reporters, columnists, videographers, photographers, bloggers and illustrators. The Mesquite is a co-curricular laboratory project that is published three days a week and supported by the School of Arts & Sciences and the Office of Student Engagement and Success.
