Univision partners with higher ed institutions

Emmy award-winning KWEX Univision 41 news station has partnered with local colleges and universities to launch a new initiative that gives hands-on experience to college students.

Our Lady of the Lake University student Yadira Chavez is just one of the participants taking part in this new education program, Proyecto U (Project U). The program pairs journalism students with professional staff from the Spanish news station.

Like an internship, students gain valuable real-world  experience in a news room from producing to reporting. However, Proyecto U participants have an opportunity to create a Spanish-language segment that will air on the show.

Univision hopes this program serves as a model so that Hispanic students continue to have access to the resources they need to develop the technical skills needed to succeed as communicators in their careers.

Pilot schools participating in Proyecto U include Texas A&M San Antonio, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, University of the Incarnate Word. Students 18 years or older from the media class at Brackenridge High School will serve technical production roles.
