Morrill ES families visit Mission Branch Library

Morrill Elementary School families learn about library resources during a parent engagement outing.

P16Plus Council of Greater Bexar County (P16Plus) is expanding its “San Antonio is Our Classroom” program by partnering with the San Antonio Public Library. The team sponsored a family-friendly “Wild About Reading” event for families and students from Morrill Elementary School on April 6, 2013.

A Model that Works
Families were invited to the free, themed event, which included a library tour, library card registration, and various activities for the students. Children decorated bookmarks, help paint murals, created block art, and using role-play, they learned about the complex web of life of the saguaro cactus. Harlandale teachers collaborated with library staff to develop the hands-on activities.

For many families, this was the first time visiting a library. The “unknown” can be intimidating for anyone, but especially for dual language learners. P16Plus is extremely happy to share this experience with the families who joined us at the Mission Library. We hope that all families will continue to visit the library, especially during the summer when the kids programs are in full swing at all the branch libraries.

“San Antonio is Our Classroom” is a proven model that works by highlighting affordable, educational resources to parents and students. If you’re an organization or you have a program that aligns with “San Antonio Is Our Classroom,” please contact Steven Hussain.
