NEISD receives EPA award for asthma awareness

Local ISD becomes the first school district to receive national leadership award for asthma awareness.

The North East Independent School District (NEISD) Asthma Awareness Education Program recently received the National Environment Leadership Award in Asthma Management by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Each year, EPA selects healthcare provides and communities who are committed to the the highest standards in asthma care and management. In an effort to educate NEISD staff and students on air quality and asthma management, the district created the Department of Environmental Health in 2007.

Since then, an aggressive Asthma Awareness Education Program has been implemented across the district. The outreach program has identified four components to create a healthy classroom environment for students: Awareness, Environment, Medication/Tools and Education/Awareness.

Additionally, the district provides an Asthma Blow Out event to educate community members and their families on available tools for achieving asthma management.
