SAYL program provides literacy help to students

If you have an hour each week, perhaps you might volunteer to become a Reading Buddy to a San Antonio child that needs literacy help.

San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL) is offering training sessions at cafécollege to train volunteers to become SAYL Reading Buddies.

During the two-hour training session, Reading Buddies, or volunteers, learn about the program curriculum developed by SAYL. Reading Buddies commit to one hour per week and choose a school that is most convenient to them. Reading Buddies are needed year-round, but only an 8-week commitment is required to participate.

SAYL created the Reading Buddies program in 1999 and has been working with second grade students offering guided reading sessions. Research indicates that children who do not read at grade level are more apt to have learning and comprehension difficulties in higher grades.

San Antonio Youth Literacy provides one-on-one reading assistance to elementary children who need to strengthen their literacy skills by providing volunteers across 65 schools in San Antonio.

To register for a training session, call 299-1533 or email at info@sayl.org.

* All training sessions scheduled above will be held at cafécollege, 131 El Paso St.
