SAYL Reading Buddies support student literacy

If you have an hour each week, perhaps you might volunteer to become a Reading Buddy to a San Antonio child.

San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL) provides one-on-one reading assistance to elementary children who need to strengthen their literacy skills by providing volunteers across 71 schools in six school districts in San Antonio.

The SAYL Reading Buddies program works with volunteers who commit to one hour per week and choose a school that is most convenient to them. Reading Buddies are needed year-round, but only an 8-week commitment is required to participate.

SAYL created the Reading Buddies program in 1999 and has been working with second grade students offering guided reading sessions. Research indicates that children who do not read at grade level are more apt to have learning and comprehension difficulties in higher grades.
