Eagle Scout makes literacy awareness his mission

Local high school senior brings literacy program to Haven for Hope.

Nicholas “Nico” Baker, a sophomore at Central Catholic High School, recently began a reading program at Haven for Hope to battle youth illiteracy as part of his Eagle Scout Project. His passion for helping others learn to read began at an early age. In fifth grade, he started a reading club at Cambridge Elementary School.

To make his literacy awareness project a reality, Baker recruited friends from his Scout Troop, his lacrosse team, and his school to help with his Eagle Scout project at Haven for Hope. On select Saturday mornings throughout the summer, the group meets to help the children read.

Haven for Hope spokesperson Melissa Escamilla hopes to see this program to continue throughout the year and would like to extend the volunteer service opportunity to other student volunteers.
