The nation’s oldest service organization for girls is getting a makeover.

The Girl Scouts is rebranding their image for a new breed of girls known as Gamma Sigma Girls. The program was initiated through the Girl Scouts of South Texas. Girls from across 10 area high schools in the San Antonio ISD will have an opportunity to develop leadership skills through peer-led experiences.

According to district spokesperson Leslie Price, SAISD is the only school district offering this national pilot which focuses on advocacy, college readiness and community service.

In a candlelight ceremony, 261 girls were inducted to the organization last Fall. Instead of focusing on completing tasks to earn badges, members attend meetings led by guest speakers and participate in activities designed to build self-esteem and decision-making skills.
