Jefferson’s college readiness program recognized

San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) high school gets nod from national affiliate for its college readiness program — AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination.

Jefferson High School was recognized as one of the AVID National Demonstration Schools. The distinction is special because out of 4,500 schools in the U.S., only 118 were AVID National Demonstration Schools in 2011.

AVID is a college readiness program that holds students accountable for performing at the highest standards possible while providing academic and social support.

The distinction is given to schools with exemplary models of the AVID program and demonstrate the very best methodologies and strategies. Statistics on the program’s national site indicates the program is a success. “Since 1990, more than 110,000 AVID students have graduated from high school and planned to attend college. Of the 27,891 AVID graduates in 2011, 91% plan to attend a postsecondary institution; 58% in four-year institutions and 33% in two-year institutions.”
