NISD students to compete in Parade of Homes

Magnet school to hold first ever microhome show case.

High school seniors at the Construction Careers Academy (CCA) at Northside Independent School District (NISD) are getting valuable hands-on experience with homebuilding projects. The students are competing in the school’s first Parade of Homes competition.

Working in teams, students are building five, portable microhome buildings. While home themes vary, each building must the same elements: a living area, kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area. This type of project-based learning gives students opportunities to serve as architects, engineers, project managers, plumbers, carpenters, and electricians.

Each team is represented by a strand of the academy: Construction Technology, Construction Management, Architectural Design, and Applied Engineering.

Students have until April 30th to complete their homes. Prizes will be awarded on May 9 and the microhomes will be open to the community on May 17. The competition is modeled after the Greater San Antonio Builder’s Association Parade of Homes.
