Recent Gates Scholar is Young Achievers alumni

Lanier graduate becomes the fourth Young Achievers alumni to receive the Gates scholarship in the last two years.

Rudy Martinez, a graduate of Lanier High School, received a good-through-graduation scholarship from The Gates Millinnium Scholars Program this past summer. Martinez, a Young Achiever Alumni, is now attending the Red McCombs Business School at the University of Texas at Austin.

Martinez is majoring in accounting and plans to pursue a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigators (FBI). In high school, Martinez served as assistant chief for the Lanier SAISD Police Explorers. His confidence and leadership skills were evident when he met with advisors, law enforcement officials, and administrators and community professionals. Martinez was active in the Academic Decathlon, participated in criminal justice leadership programs and served as treasurer of the National Honor Society. Additionally, Martinez was branch manager for the student-run Alamo Federal Credit Union branch that is located at Lanier High School.

Young Achievers, a program of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio, is a college preparation program with partnering school districts. Students who commit to the 16-week program participate in workshops, take field trips to college campuses, meet with a mentor and have an opportunity to take the SAT test. Students are given an opportunity to compete for a scholarship for a three-week summer study workshop at a university.
