Winners of Car Giveaway, Promoting Attendence

Attending school every day pays off for two individuals at Southwest Independent School District (SWISD).

At last weekend’s annual Senior Walk Car Giveaway at Southwest ISD, two lucky winners walked away with a brand new car after participating in the district’s attendance initiative. A brand new car was awarded to a student and a district employee when their keys turned on the donated Scion. The giveaway is sponsored each year by North Park Toyota of San Antonio.

Those two lucky winners were Yvonne De La Garza, a teacher from Sky Harbour Elementary and Christopher Williamson, a senior from Southwest High School.

About the Attendance Initiative
There were multiple requirements for those who entered the giveaway.  Eligible graduating seniors must have met all state assessments and must have been in good standing. Students received up to four entries for each of the categories: GPA, Grades, Attendance and Discipline.

Previously, the contest had been open to Southwest High School teachers only, but to keep in line with the district’s theme “Hero’s Journey,” the contest was for the first time open to all district staff, including bus drivers and cafeteria workers. District staff did not compete with students for the giveaway and had their own qualifying guidelines.

Last year’s winners were high school senior Luis Enrique Angel Ayala and Rosalinda Alexander, a teacher from Sun Valley Elementary.

Merle Gothard, general manager of North Park Toyota, offers the cars as incentives to students to reward them for their commitment to being on time at school every day.
