AVID students at SAISD explore college readiness

Hundreds of students and their parents attended this month’s AVID Expo– an SAISD initiative promoting college readiness and success.

San Antonio Independent School District’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination ) program is designed to boost the number of students who are prepared to pursue post-secondary education. This year’s annual AVID Expo allowed middle school students to research college readiness exams and colleges and universities to which they were interested in applying. The 8th-grade students shared their findings in style of the Jeopardy game show. According to district officials, there are approximately 1,700 AVID students in SAISD.

“AVID is just one of a number of college readiness programs and initiatives underway in SAISD, which has continuously been working to boost the number of students prepared for post-secondary education.” said Michelle Jimenez, SAISD Communications, adding, “AVID is a voluntary program designed to ensure that students succeed in a rigorous college-prep curriculum, participate in mainstream school activities and are put on a path to a four-year college.”
