Board Trustees select interim as lone candidate

Interim gets nod from board to become next superintendent.

The South San Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to keep interim superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra as the district’s leader. The announcement was made at Tuesday’s board meeting; however, there is a mandatory 21-day waiting period before Dr. Saavedra’s hiring is confirmed.

The board agreed to meet Dr. Saavedra’s conditions for hire, which called for the removal of all hiring and firing authority from the board and banning the hiring of family members. His third stipulation called for five-year contracts for superintendents.

He has over 36 years experience in education and served as superintendent at Houston ISD and Corpus Christi ISD. Dr. Saavedra earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees at Texas A&I University in Kingsville and completed his doctorate in school administration at the University of Michigan.
