Northside ISD families explore and learn at SAMA

Parent engagement program encourages Northside families to extend learning opportunities.

With success at the heels of our very first pilot with Harlandale Independent School District (ISD) and the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), P16Plus Council of Greater Bexar County expanded the parent engagement program to one of San Antonio’s largest school districts.

Northside ISD families from Cable Elementary were invited to experience a free, themed event that introduced them to ancient Egyptian cultures. Parents and children participated in hands-on art activities and storytelling. They learned about artifacts and wrote their names using the hieroglyphs alphabet. Families also enjoyed refreshments and even had their pictures taken dressed in Egyptian costumes.

This is the second event to launch under the P16Plus “San Antonio is Our Classroom” program that highlights affordable, educational resources available to parents and students. The parent engagement events are the result of a “San Antonio Is Our Classroom” initiative identified in P16Plus’ PreK-3rd Grade Strategy that aims to address the reading and academic performance of San Antonio children.

SAMA gives all San Antonio families an opportunity to visit the museum with free admission every Tuesday from 4 – 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to Noon. Additionally, the museum sponsors  First Sundays for Families day, which provides free admission and themed activities for children from 1 – 5 p.m. on every first Sunday of the month.
