P16Plus adds three new board members

Steen, Verstuyft and Elizondo join P16Plus board.

P16Plus Council of Greater Bexar County (P16Plus) is pleased to introduce the new members of the P16Plus Board of Directors. The appointees, which were approved at a recent board meeting, include John Steen, Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft and Jorge Elizondo.

Mr. John Steen, a Texas attorney and former 108th Texas Secretary of State, was recently appointed by Governor Rick Perry to serve on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. His term runs from January 8, 2014 – August, 31, 2019. He is vice chairman of the UTSA Development Board, an Executive Committee member of the Chancellor’s Council of the UT System, a trustee of the Texas State History Museum Foundation, and member of the Philosophical Society of Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University and a J.D. the University of Texas School of Law.

John Steen

Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft has more than 24 years experience in education. He has worked for the Southwest Independent School District as a coach, teacher and administrator. He has served as the Superintendent of Schools for the past four years. Previous recognitions include Teacher of the Year at McNair Middle School (1992). Later, it was his leadership that assisted McAuliffe Middle School and Southwest High School to gain recognitions at the state and national level, including the “Texas Successful School” award from 1995 through 1998; the Texas Education Agency “Recognized School” award five years from 1998 through 2003; the Texas Education Agency “Gold Performance” award from 2002 through 2005; and the United States Department of Education’s “National Blue Ribbon School” Award in 2000. He finished his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Master of Science in educational administration at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and a doctoral degree at Texas A&M University at College Station.

Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft

Mr. Jorge Elizondo serves as Vice President of Customer Insights at H-E-B Grocery and has more than 15 years with the retail giant. Prior to joining H-E-B, he worked as a adjunct college instructor at St. Philip’s College where he taught sociology and worked in the Institutional Effectiveness Department from 1992-1995. He also serves on the board of the Junior Achievement– an organization committed to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Mr. Elizondo earned his undergraduate degree in sociology from Yale University and a Master of Arts from in sociology from Stanford University.
