Providing EISD residents therapy through dance

The Neighborhood Place El Hogar de los Vecinos offers an abundance of community programs for residents in Edgewood district, and dance therapy is one of the most popular programs.

Dance Therapy – Dance Your Depression Away, Inc., introduces dance in fun, easy-to-learn lessons. Dance is used as a therapeutic tool to relieve stress and fatigue and increase physical and mental activity. Additionally, it’s a great way to boost self-esteem, develop social skills, and it builds community and a sense of pride.

The free dance classes are offered every Wednesday from 5 – 7 p.m. Children, families and senior citizens are often found dancing their cares away as they learn to ballroom dance, Cha- Cha-Cha and Tango. The cultural class also teaches participants the Merengue and Salsa. Dance classes vary month per month.

Another community service that has made a difference in Edgewood ISD is Dancing with the Children. Founder and CEO Jorge Alonso Perez says that area schools have seen a dramatic improvement in TAKS  performance and attendance. Because students don’t want to miss out on the fun dance lessons, they attend school regularly. Schools who have participated in past programs include Lyndon B. Johnson, Roosevelt, and Loma Park Elementary.
