San Antonio teachers named finalists for award

Area teachers are taken by surprise to learn they are finalists in the HEB Excellence in Education awards.

Four public school districts are celebrating their teachers who were selected as finalists for the popular H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards this week. The annual awards celebrate outstanding educators who inspire and make a difference across all levels of education.

Finalists include Cheryl Duckers from Cambridge Elementary School (Alamo Heights ISD); Nicole Hibbits from Royal Ridge Elementary (North East ISD); Mary Lagleder from Warren High School (Northside ISD); and Michael Richards who teaches at Stacy Junior/High School (Lackland ISD). Calli Griess from Howard Early Childhood Center (Alamo Heights ISD) was also named a finalist in the Rising Star category.

All the finalists received $1,000 for themselves and their schools. In May, the winners will be announced and will walk away with prizes valuing $430,000 total.
