South San selects new interim superintendent

Retired district leader is appointed to serve as interim.

Board Trustees at South San Independent School District (SouthSan ISD) recently appointed Abelardo Saavedra, as the district’s interim superintendent. Dr. Saavedra replaces interim Mourette Hodge, who announced her resignation mid December.

Dr. Saavedra recently served as a clinical professor of education administration at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. In 2009, he resigned as superintendent from Houston ISD, America’s seventh largest school district. Prior to his work at Houston, Dr. Saavedra served as superintendent of schools in his native Corpus Christi from 1993 – 2000. His education career began over 36 years ago as a classroom teacher in 1972.

He earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees at Texas A&I University in Kingsville and completed his doctorate in school administration at the University of Michigan.
