STEM-focused workshops inspire local educators

Business site visits give new perspective to math and science teachers to develop lesson plans that will motivate students to embrace STEM-based curriculum.

The San Antonio Mathematics and Science Education Coalition (SAMSEC) hosted a couple of two-day workshops for math and science teachers from San Antonio area schools. The first workshop was held at the Medical Education & Training Campus (METC) and the Education Service Center (ESC-20), and the second workshop was held at Valero Energy Corporation. Educators were introduced to teaching strategies and given tours of various site locations to see how math and science is applied to real-world settings.

The educator workshops were designed to help teachers answer the student’s question: “When am I ever going to use this?”  The workshops gave teachers an opportunity to develop content-specific lessons, integrate real-world video clips from local businesses, and post video and audio media of these lessons for wider distribution.  Teachers were able to hear from site engineers and construction personnel and see first-hand just how significant STEM knowledge is to their careers.

Participating companies included: EO2 Concepts, University Health, METC, Barrios Family Restaurants, H-E-B, SAWS, Wyle, Zachry Holdings, Inc., InCube Labsand COX Manufacturing. Employees for these companies explained their individual job duties and gave teachers an insight into how math integrated into their everyday lives.

The workshops began June 10-11 and ran through June 17- 18. Each session featured 40 teachers who taught Grades 8-12 mathematics and/or science. Registered participants represented 12 school districts, one charter school, and one private school. Teachers were treated to lunch each day and received a $300 stipend– generously provided by participating business partners.
