STEM-focused workshops inspire local educators

Business site visits give new perspective to math and science teachers to develop lesson plans that will motivate students to embrace STEM-based curriculum.

The San Antonio Mathematics and Science Education Coalition (SAMSEC) hosted a two-day workshop for math and science teachers from San Antonio area schools. The first workshop was held at Valero Energy Corporation and included tours of the host site as well as site tours of the San Antonio Policy Academy, Cox Manufacturing and the San Antonio Water System.

The educator workshops are designed to help teachers answer the student’s question: “When am I ever going to use this?”  The workshop gave teachers an opportunity to develop content-specific lessons, integrating real-world video clips from local businesses, and post video and audio media of these lessons for wider distribution.

The workshop held on June 11 – 12 featured over 30 teachers who teach Grades 8-12 mathematics and/or science. Registered participants represented 12 school districts, one charter school, and one private school.

Another teacher workshop is scheduled for June 18 – 19 at the San Antonio Water System and will also include site visits to local businesses.
