AVANCE SA wins statewide early childhood award

The best of the best educators were recognized this weekend in Houston at the annual statewide teaching awards.

The 2012 H-E-B Excellence Awards were announced this weekend and San Antonio had four winners. In the early childhood area, Avance San Antonio walked away the big winner in the statewide Early Childhood Education program category taking home $25,000. Two educators were recognized for their excellent teaching, including Leslie-Anne Balido, who won the Rising Star award. Balido, dean of Woodridge Elementary in Alamo Heights ISD, won $5,000 for herself and $5,000 for her school. Emily Swoboda, an English teacher at Northside ISD’s Communication Arts High School won the Leadership Award. She won $10,000 for herself and $10,000 for her school.

Lytle ISD won $50,000 for the best Small School District. The district was recognized for its success to raise test scores and graduation rates.

This is the 11th year that H-E-B recognizes the outstanding efforts of school districts and educators across the state awarding over $800,000 in prize money to winners and finalists. The keynote speaker was Mark Kelley, a retired astronaut who is also married to former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords.
