New study reveals that babies learn basic language skills while still in the womb.

According to a recently published report, newborn children show an interest in vowel sounds even when they are just hours old. The study conducted by psychology professor Christine Moon and colleagues from Pacific Lutheran University observed about 40 newborns in a nursery. Researchers observed the newborns and noted increased interest in native words (spoken by their mothers) and foreign words.

“This is the first study that shows fetuses learn prenatally about the particular speech sounds of a mother’s language. This study moves the measurable result of experience with speech sounds from six months of age to before birth,” said Moon.
