SAISD teachers participate in EDI Training

Teachers from three pilot school districts are gearing up to assess kindergarteners’ strengths and weaknesses.

The United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County in conjunction with various community partners are administering the Early Development Instrument (EDI) training and assessment to gather data on kindergarten students.

The EDI enables school districts to adjust existing curriculum and early learning programs to meet the needs of currents students.

The pilot school districts include San Antonio ISD, Harlandale and Edgewood. Over 333 teachers will be trained to evaluate over 5,000 children to receive common robust indicators on the readiness of children in Kindergarten.

The funding is made possible through an EDI grant, which will help identify and respond to early childhood needs in these target areas.

EDI is a comprehensive, community-level, measure of early development and school readiness for young children. This new tool allows United Way to identify and reach these children, prepare them for kindergarten and set them on a course to be successful graduates.

Local partnerships include P16Plus Council of Greater Bexar County, the City of San Antonio, Texas School Ready!, Family Service Association, AVANCE San Antonio, and CI-Now.

The United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County was one of four recipients chosen by the Texas Early Learning Council last fall.
