P16Plus Partners with SAMA for Pilot Program

Lifelong learning doesn’t have to come from a textbook nor is it contained in a classroom. That idea and San Antonio’s wealth of resources is the premise that underscores the P16Plus program, “San Antonio Is Our Classroom.”

Harlandale ISD became the first school district to participate in a pilot event led by P16Plus Council of Greater Bexar County. Partnering with the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) as the test site, P16Plus sponsored a free Family Day at SAMA celebrating “Mummy’s Day” on Saturday, May 12, 2012.

Harlandale families from Columbia Heights Elementary were invited to the free, themed event that introduced ancient Egyptian cultures. Families participated in hands-on art activities, storytelling, and explored Egyptian fun facts on iPads. First and second graders enjoyed refreshments, tours and even had their pictures taken dressed in Egyptian costumes.

A follow up Art Exhibit on Sunday, June 3 from 1:30 – 3 p.m. at SAMA will showcase the beautiful works created by the students. Harlandale families are invited to celebrate the art works created by Columbia Heights students. Coincidentally, June 3 is also the museum’s First Sundays for Families day, which provides free admission and themed activities for children from 1 – 5 p.m. on every first Sunday of the month.

The pilot program will be expanded to include other school districts and grade levels in the near future.

“San Antonio is Our Classroom” is a program under P16Plus that highlights affordable, educational resources available to parents and students. The pilot event was a “San Antonio Is Our Classroom” initiative identified in P16Plus’ PreK-3rd Grade Strategy that aims to address the reading and academic performance of San Antonio children.
